Publicists’ Celebrities: Between Beckham and Haye

November 9, 2009

I am confused over iconic-worshipping of celebrities that one wonders what may have influenced their incredible high-personality profiles especially if they do not make noticeable positive impact to the society and lives of the people as role models in character and characteristics.

In my PR Class at University of Westminster, an English footballer, David Beckham is always cited among other global personalities like Michael Jackson, Barack Obama, as an example of individuals whose actions and inactions are reference points for media mentions.

Until when I start to read free daily newspapers of Evening Standard, Metro and London Lite that I try to understand what really make some of the individuals more visible and recognisable: skills of their hired publicists and the power of the press. In fact some of the celebrities are just and simply media hype for commercilization and promotional stunts.

British media can be very sensationally patriotic with the way they cast their headlines and promote their brands and the people. Most of the papers have beautiful layouts and flawless in their brief narration of events… no more lengthy news items or long features… short and direct but the newsy stories focus largely on sex, crime, conflict, competition (mostly on sports) politicking, politics of welfarism and lately casualties from the War-fronts.

The publicity that caught my attention last week was on undisputable new World Boxing association (WBA) champion David Haye. He boasted with pride like an average American (even if subconsciously he doubted himself) bragging he would defeat a truly heavy Beast from the East Nikolai Valuev to become Britain’s latest world heavyweight champ. The media supported, endorsed and hailed him. But the published pictures of his extremely giant opponent, was so scary that I kept wondering who was fooling who.

Finally the day came and he won to the surprise of almost everybody.

For keeping to his words and for not disappointing the media and their readers (I am one of them) he is indeed a new genuine icon and celebrity that deserves more publicity-hype than David Beckham who I only know as a fashion-footballer and husband of gorgeously skinny Victoria, a former singer.

While some media have started campaigning to launch him into another British shining star with his good look, coherency and gait, he should not be distracted in his dream to be a great boxer. He is said to be a faithful family man who so much cares for his wife, Natasha, and young child Cassius, who live with him in his northern Cyprus hideaway. He has admitted that he wouldn’t want to be mobbed like Becks to enjoy a simple happy life.

I am also glad with his humility to move freely and exchange greeting with people when he told the press that his popularity is already increasing to the point where it becomes quite strange to himbecause of the fight. He said: “Ricky Hatton, Joe Calzaghe and Lennox Lewis are our highest-profile boxers around, but they can still go down the street. People might stop them to shake their hand, but they don’t get mobbed. David Beckham couldn’t walk down Oxford Street, it just wouldn’t happen. There would be an instant roadblock. That’s what I like about boxing, no matter how well you do, you can still have a normal life. I wouldn’t want that to change.”
With that words David Haye becomes a celebrity I can dote on… fresh, talented with a vision.

By the way, if hired publicists are paid by ambitious celebrity, do the image merchants also pay the media for photo shots and recycled news stories in the press around the paymaster? I suspect some of the paparazzis are arrangees not truly interested in the photo session just to create the HYPE… another name for propaganda. I am just confused.

Colourful Newsletter with Adobe InDesign

November 6, 2009

Today is the deadline for each student of MA PR class of University of Westminster, Harrow campus to produce an aesthetic four-page newsletter after a whole week exercise and training in graphic design, formatting and style. The module seems to be what in Nigeria we call ” a crash-programme” with learning of various techniques using the Adobe Indesign software and Photoshop within a shortest time.

We learn some tricks with Photoshop to manipulate original figures or pictures to project other image. We discover how propagandists utilise some of such tricks to propagate some images to the joy of their sponsors and to fool the target audiences.

While our tutorial is based on latest software for newsletter production which is Adobe InDesign, we learn that other programmes are available and used by reputable publishing institutions for the production of journals, magazine, newsletter and even websites. The software includes Microsoft Publisher for PC or Mac, QuarkXPress, Adobe PageMaker and CorelDRAW.

Though the original (authentic) programmes are very expensive in the market, we learn that there are discount windows for student to enable them afford them instead of patronizing pirated versions.

I am surprised to observe that many of my colleagues are able to produce highly aesthetics, colourful and pictorial newsletters loaded with texts of information, making one to guess how they could have been able to accomplish the task in one week. The trick is further studies in hostels and most especially in the library where computers are available 24/7. This convenience makes it is necessary for full term students to have accommodation on the campus or in the vicinity close to the university.

The dilemma of everyone is how to create news or features on the images chosen for individual newsletter. For a story teller, like sensational journalist it may be simple: Just concoct a story or imaginary interview… and BAM the publication is ready.

Newsletter Production

November 3, 2009

This week, the MA PR Class of University of Westminster, Harrow Campus is engaged in extensive training on production of inhouse newsletter. The instructor is one of the best page planner and graphic artist in newspaper and other informative publications. Within just 2 days, students are able to design full colour cover with lay-outs in either 3 or 4 columns. The practical training is daily till weekend.

The training will afford student after graduation the necessary skill to effective produce or monitor production of inhouse publication such as bulletins, newsletters, magazine and if possible with enough resources newspapers.

One thing I notice that the changing development in technology, especially in software production to a large extent will determine the process of design. I realise that Publisher and Corel Draw soft seem to be overtaken by Adobe InDesign programme

Press Conference Practical

October 30, 2009

Almost everybody in the MA PR class at University of Westminster, Harrow Campus look forward for today when each group of about five-six will make presentation on Press Conference. Such practical experiences may be quite exciting considering the fact that members in each group are to dramatise the act of managing Press Conference from: preparation, venue, seating/standing arrangement, moderation and speech delivery and to the ultimate question session.

The major arguement from various discussions is: should a Press conference be extemporal or addressed through a prepared speech before questions and answers session?

The outcome of today’s presentation, with our professional guide from our tutors, Pam Michaela will give us further ideas on how to manage Press Conference and even if there is likelihood of presence of mischivious journalists in the audience who may distract panels’attention with frivolous questions.

I realise that a writing by a professional communicator and blogger, Jonathan Morrow on “7 Bad Habits of Writing” may likely be useful too for public speaking if we understand our target audience. United Nations of Students in PR Class at Harrow Campus

October 25, 2009

I couldnt believe it until I join the MA PR class 2009/10 at University of Westminster, Harrow Campus to discover the students representing different continents, races and religious backgrounds. Yet they are all united through friendly disposition to break the barrier of racial differences.

At class I feel at home, but not on my way home through the tube/train where I usually find myself in the midst of the real British convertism: Everybody to his tent and on his/her own… no chatting, no smiling, no greeting not even a simple sign to render a support if one is lost. You must learn fast as independent to know your way. Get the map, read the signs and listen to announcement you may not be lost.

Occasionally, i become amused seeing funny public kissing in the train by some partners (I learn, there are more partners, the type of boy-girl-friending, than happily married couples in Britain). I always wonder why the pretentious kissing in public when they have different locations in their abodes to enjoy themselves. I always wonder, trying to adjust to my new environment.

By the way, last Friday I spent five good hours between rail stations and the train/tube services as I got lost amongst the different stations. I was confused between Victorial Line, Hammersmith Line from Metropolitan Line and Northern Line.

After an exhaustive day, I enjoyed heavy African meal that immmediately tranquilised me for a sweet and nice sleep
